The Labour Party stands with the people of Ukraine against the military invasion being carried out by the Russian Federation and President Vladimir Putin

Our thoughts and solidarity are with the Ukrainian people.

I know that people in the United Kingdom are feeling frightened and uncertain.

I know that Ukrainians will be worrying for friends and family back home.

Labour’s position is clear:

  • We must urgently reinforce and reassure our NATO allies in Eastern Europe

  • Our support for NATO and our obligation to provide collective defence to our allies, as set out under Article 5 of the NATO treaty, is unshakeable

  • The hardest possible sanctions must be taken against Vladimir Putin’s regime: it’s finances frozen and its ability to function crippled.

  • We must ban trade in Russian sovereign debt.

  • And there are changes we must make in Britain. For too long our country has been a safe-haven for Putin-linked money. That is why Labour is calling on Boris Johnson to crack open the shell-companies in which this money is hidden.

Putin seeks division. That’s why we must stand united.

Alongside Labour’s Shadow Cabinet, I have met with our allies in NATO to discuss the urgent situation in Ukraine and I will continue to do so. We know that Putin hopes for inaction, so we will continue to take a stand. Now is the time to prove that good will always prevail.
